Upcoming Events

The Ottawa Chapter coordinates a variety of activities throughout each calendar year. Activities range from the local Chapter AGM, which is traditionally held in the first quarter of the year, to seminars on a wide range of topics. Tours are also held at various times throughout the year. The Ottawa Chapter regularly plans New Members' Nights, which are designed to welcome new Licencees to the profession. These events often include a speaker or a tour of an interesting Ottawa area site - the Diefenbunker for example!

For those with an interest in sports -- there is the HOPE Beach Volleyball team, the Annual Golf Tournament held in the summer, the Curling Bonspiel and a family night at the Kanata Wave Pool, which are usually held in the first quarter of the year. For the avid paddler.

For more information on upcoming events, please check the most recent calendar of events. We welcome suggestions from you on activities, seminars or tours of interest: please contact our Chapter Chair, via e-mail.

2010 Student Paper Night

Date: Wednesday April 7, 2010 6:00 pm
Venue: Sala San Marco Hall, 215 Preston Avenue
Cost: $40.00 per ticket / Students $20
Description: The Annual Student Papers Night is a friendly competition between the Engineering undergraduates from the University of Ottawa and Carleton University. Two groups of students from each University present their 4th year technical paper, which is adjudicated by three judges selected from the engineering community at large.

Last year close to $2,000 worth of cash prizes were distributed to the participating teams. The evening presents an opportunity for the engineering students to compete in a technical forum, to exercise their skills in public speaking and to defend the technical substance of their papers.

The Arctic: Challenges and Opportunities in Canada's Backyard

This presentation by Dr Peter Harrison was originally held on October 28, but due to popular demand, a second session is scheduled for Wednesday April 7, 2010.

Venue: Museum of Science and Technology
1867 St Laurent Blvd, Ottawa
Refreshments: 6:00pm
Discussion of Arctic Artifacts with CSTM Curators: 7:00 pm
Presentation: 7:30 pm
Cost & Registration: No cost, but registration required at: http://thearctic.eventbrite.com

Description: Interest in the Arctic is heating up - because the Arctic is heating up! This presentation will outline some of the issues and opportunities facing Canada - and recent actions taken - especially within the international/geo-political context. There will be some "myth busting" too, particularly given the emerging role of the Arctic Council, and the dynamics within the European Union and its member states. These will create technological and public policy opportunities and challenges for this generation of engineers and public servants. Join the dialogue, look into our past (Arctic artifacts will be on display) and have a peek into our future. Following his highly successful presentation on Canada's Arctic at IPAC's annual general meeting, Dr. Peter Harrison has graciously agreed to reprise his presentation at this event.

Ottawa Regional Science Fair

The 49th edition of the Ottawa Regional Science Fair (ORSF) will be held on April 9 and April 10, 2010 at Hillcrest High School in Ottawa. The ORSF is organized and run by a volunteer organization to encourage students in the Ottawa-Carleton Region, from grades 7 to 12, to research, develop, and present projects in the fields of science and engineering. Each year, approximately 200 projects are entered and judged in the junior, intermediate, senior and special awards categories. Participation in the Fair also ensures the students' eligibility to compete for a position on the team representing the Ottawa-Carleton Region at the subsequent nation competition, the Canada Wide Science Fair (CWSF).

The ORSF organizing committee consists of a range of volunteers mostly from private industry who are committed to this event as a means of attracting and encouraging youth towards sciences and engineering as a career. This year, the ORSF is looking for new volunteers with fresh ideas and energy to help plan for the event, as well as to help setup and coordinate the event on April 9 and 10. If you are interested in joining the ORSF organizing committee, please visit their website at: http://www.orsf.ca or contact:
