Welcome

It is my honour to be the Chair of the Ottawa Chapter of the Professional Engineers of Ontario in 2017 – a significant year as it is the 150th year of Canada and 95th year of the existence of the Professional Engineers Ontario.

As we look forward to our future, we should look back at our beginnings. Established on June 14, 1922, Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) is the licensing and regulating body for engineering in the province through the Professional Engineers Act, a self governing profession that licenses provincial Engineers and regulates professional engineering in Ontario to serve and protect the public.

Now, you may ask, ‘what is a Chapter’ – these were formed over 50 years ago to provide a crucial link between members-at-large and PEO council, and to promote the value of engineering to local communities. The Ottawa Chapter is the largest with over 8,500 members and covers the Ottawa Valley. It is managed by an Executive Committee consisting of five Officers and up to nine Directors, under the authority of the Professional Engineers Act as governed by the Chapter Mandate::

  • to facilitate participation and training of licence holders in the governance, succession planning for PEO leadership, and statutory duties of the profession
  • to work to identify the value of the profession to future licence holders
  • to promote and enhance understanding within society of the self-regulated engineering profession and the importance of licensure
  • to actively participate in PEO’s policy development

Your Chapter's executive members and dedicated volunteers work together to plan, develop and deliver a comprehensive program of events which enable our members and the next generation of engineers to develop their individual skills & knowledge, to network and collaborate with peers, and to act as ambassadors for engineering to the general public. These programs are focused on specific areas of interest including:

  • Education and Outreach events – Student Competitions, Engineering Awareness events, Schools Visits, Student Members, Science Fairs, Student Papers, Engineer-In-Residence liaison
  • Networking events - Seminars, Tours, Professional Development activities, Panel Discussions, Symposiums
  • Support Programs - Government Liaison Program (interacting with MPPs and Civic Leaders), New membership certificate ceremonies (New Members Night) and Mentorship Program for Engineers in Training.

Our plans for this year are to host programs and events to raise awareness of engineering and the issues relevant to the public at large, including infrastructure, innovation, energy, environmental stewardship and more. We will be working with the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE) to enhance public awareness of engineering and engineers and continue to roll out an Entrepreneurship Program to support our current and future engineers. In addition, our thoughts are to engage the youth in discovering the joys of math, science and engineering through education outreach programs and local events throughout the year, including those associated with National Engineering Month.

All of these efforts are possible through the participation of our dedicated volunteers, who bring their energy and passion to the planning and hosting of such events. I welcome you to join our group of volunteers by contacting me or any of the executives listed on our website.

I invite your feedback and active engagement to allow the Ottawa Chapter to have a positive impact on members' career development & growth, on the engineering profession, and on society at large.
